We Do Care: Celebration Night for Care Leavers

Question:
What do cake, a saxophonist, golf, boujee balloons and a room full of inspiring young people have in common?
Answer:
They were all part of one unforgettable evening earlier this year at Wycombe Heights Golf Centre, where over 60 care-experienced young people from across Buckinghamshire came together for a night of fun, music and connection!

This event, created by young people for young people, was the biggest of its kind in the county in over five years — and it absolutely delivered.

Created by Young People, for Young People

The celebration was co-designed with young people from the Children in Care Council, We Do Care.

Our brilliant Care Ambassadors took the lead — from choosing the venue to picking the “boujee & fun” theme, and shaping every part of the evening’s entertainment.

Our young guests enjoyed:

  • Golfing booths
  • DJ and dancefloor
  • Magic tricks
  • Hair styling
  • Fresh trims from barbers
  • A live saxophonist
  • Hand-painted henna tattoos
  • Delicious food and a celebration cake

There was something for everyone, and plenty of space to relax, connect, or simply soak up the atmosphere.

Celebrating Strength, Talent and Individuality

A highlight of the evening was the Awards Ceremony, with certificates and trophies handed out to the young people with positive messages or their achievements written out by their Youth Worker, Personal Advisers, Social Workers and Key workers and other professionals.

“Winning the award really surprised me — I felt seen”

–  Young Person

“The awards were lovely, it was emotional in the best way”

– Young Person

There were also a couple of impromptu displays of talent from our very own care leavers: a powerful solo singing performance worthy of the X Factor finals by Will and a mesmerising dance by a group of our young people, fusing up-to-the-minute dance floor moves with their traditional cultural influences. It was expressive, spontaneous and had everyone cheering.

“It was SO good — like a proper night out with your mates, but made special just for us”

– Young person

“They Are Amazing”

Angel, who leads the We Do Care programme, said:

“This event was about reminding our young people that they are AMAZING. Seeing them in one place — laughing, glowing, showing off their talents and making new friends — was truly something special.”

From the first round of golf to the last boujee black and gold balloon being taken down, this was more than a party — it was a powerful reminder of what happens when care-experienced young people are at the heart of something made with real thought, warmth and joy.
