What did young people say in The Green Space?
Development and infrastructure
– We see new homes being built and worry about losing green space.
– We want to see solar panels on the roofs of public buildings and supermarkets.
– We are interested in new technologies, such as solar / electric cars, but know these are expensive.
Public transport
– Punctuality and availability of buses and trains is a significant barrier for young people in using public transport.
– Safety is also a barrier to using sustainable forms of transport – for example pedestrians and bikes sharing path space, road crossings, and risks from others on buses.
Eco-anxiety
– The climate emergency affects our mental health. We worry about loss of green space, litter, and the amount of cars.
Climate action in schools
– We have loads of ideas about promoting climate responsibility in schools – From meat-free canteen days to nature/wild gardens to green roofs and more!
– Today helped to show the disparity between schools in climate response actions – some schools are doing lots, some are doing very little.
– We worry about air pollution – especially buses and cars idling around schools.
The value of nature
– We enjoy the quiet of nature and would like to find more opportunities to spend time in nature. We value time outdoors especially when things are stressful, such as near exam time.
So What?
- Interclimate Network have created an insights report from the information they gathered at the Youth Summit, and this has formed part of their Youth Climate Action Research. They have shared the ICN report with Buckinghamshire Council Chief Executive Officer, Rachael Shimmin who has in turn passed it on to colleagues.
- Interclimate Network will soon meet with Youth Voice Bucks and Buckinghamshire Council colleagues to explore other youth voice opportunities such as a Climate Conference for Buckinghamshire schools.
